Jaws (Dir. Steven Spielberg, 1975)

A young Steven Spielberg brought us this classic from the movies about the sea where a great white shark begins to terrorize the beach of Amity Island. To stop him, the local police chief, together with a marine biologist and a shark hunter, set out to hunt down the animal and end the horror on this small beach.

A film that can be considered a slasher in the water, where the main victims are young visitors who are terrified by a shark that wants to eat them. Even at the time it caused the fear of swimming in the sea and an example of the creatures that inhabit this mysterious place that is the sea.

It also has a soundtrack by the legendary John Williams who gave us one of the melodies that every movie buff is capable of recognizing.

The Song of the Sea (Dir. Tomm Moore, 2014)

Made with the traditional animation technique, it is the story of Saoirse and Ben, two children who live with their father in a lighthouse on an island in Ireland. Their father sent them to live with their grandmother to protect them from the dangers of the sea and there, Ben discovers that his sister is a Selkie: a sea fairy who turns into a seal and that with her song she is capable of releasing magical beings. On their journey, Ben and his sister must free these magical beings who can regain their power, but they will have to face a fearsome witch.

It may seem like a children’s movie, however, themes such as the sadness of losing a mother and the melancholy, can be quite heavy for the little ones. The director manages to show these emotions with the use of landscapes and that with the elaborate sound, they will make the melancholic songs take us hand in hand with the characters on their emotional journey to overcome the adversities of the past.

All is lost (Dir. J. C. Chandor, 2013)

One of the most interesting films about the sea, which stars the legendary actor and director Robert Redford and with only 5 minutes of dialogue, is the story of a sailboat and its only crew member, who after being hit by a container at sea it is adrift in the middle of the Indian Ocean.
