Montpellier: Gaston excluded from entry

Like Ugo Humbert, Ugo Gaston almost won the second round of the Montpellier tournament but he started too far to hope to overthrow Lorenzo Sonego.

Against Lorenzo Sonego, Hugo Gaston failed to create a surprise to qualify for the second round. The 162nd world has yet been able to believe in the feat against the seeded number 7. He finally lost after 2 hours and 20 minutes of fighting (3-6, 7-6 (7), 1-6). In the first set, the Frenchman saved a break point at 1-2 but he also missed the opportunity to take the lead in the next game.

In difficulty faced with the aggressiveness of the Italian who managed to shorten the exchange to score important points, Hugo Gaston finally lost his service game to 2-3. He failed to recover from his delay and conceded the first set in 36 minutes on a shutout from the 36th world. Broken from the start of the second round, the native of Toulouse was not resigned. He remained in his match thanks to his resilience and was able to come back by taking advantage of the length of the exchanges. After his break to return to 4-4, he was able to find new resources to forget a new break conceded.

When Lorenzo Sonego served to win the match, Hugo Gaston responded with a shutout that allowed him to return to 6-6. After saving a match point at 6-5, he took advantage of a found first ball to come back to a set all over on his second opportunity to do so. In vain. While the eighth finalist at Roland Garros seemed to have gained the upper hand, he lost the first four games of the last round. Even a debreak was not enough. He lost his service game again in the wake and finally lost on a shutout after an endless fight against the 36th world. A frustrating defeat but certainly very formative.
