MEXICO CITY (AP) – The federal government of Mexico has received about 1,100 acts of « legal claim » of different kinds in the courts against actions implemented during the pandemic, said Thursday the undersecretary of Health Hugo López-Gatell.
According to López-Gatell, federal spokesman for the crisis caused by the coronavirus, some of these claims were filed by citizens, but « there is a not inconsiderable part that comes from political groups » that report inaction by the federal authorities or that they did not comply with their attributions.
Mexico has already exceeded 416,000 infections and on Thursday reached 46,000 confirmed deaths.
Several states are starting to consider slowing down their economic opening or even backing down – Mexico City, for example, with more than 72,000 infected, does not rule out returning to the red light (the highest alert level) _, which could increase the discrepancies between the actions of the states, which have been present since the beginning of the pandemic.
For this reason, López Gatell explained at a press conference, in the Thursday meeting with governors and representatives of the states it was clearly specified what are the legal elements that would lead to the delimitation of responsibility in case of non-compliance with a measure or an action had an « adverse consequence ».
« If the federation says you’re in red and the state says ‘I’m in orange and I’m going to do these other activities,’ very well, the state must answer for its sovereign decisions, » he said. “It is not a threat (of sanctions); it is clarity, it is openness.
