A group of Mexicans, together with researchers from other countries, develop an algorithm capable of identifying the cough of a sick person with COVID-19

A group of researchers from Mexico, the United States, Spain and Italy develop a algorithm technology to identify if a person is infected with COVID-19 just by listening to her cough, from your cell phone and without leaving home.

Led by specialists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), scientists from the five countries compile a database with thousands of coughs of inhabitants of all ages, who are healthy and who are carriers of the disease.

This information will be analyzed with algorithms and artificial intelligence “so that an intelligence system records the details of a cough of a sick person and her differences with someone healthy ”, explained to Efe, Bárbara Vizmanos, person in charge of the project in Mexico and professor at the University of Guadalajara.

The cough and even the tone of voice of a sick, asymptomatic or healthy person have differences. This principle will help the system to identify with only 15 seconds of audio if a person is in any of those states.

“The people who participate ‘donate’ their cough and their general data and if they are carriers, those coughs will feed an artificial intelligence system that, through voice recognition, will identify what healthy and sick coughs are like and the system makes Comparison of sounds with a precision that the ear is not capable, “he explained.

The study started two months ago at the Hospital Clinic de Barcelona; at the Ospedale Luigi Sacco Hospital in Milan; in various health centers in the United States and continues in Mexico, through the Civil Hospitals and the Health Sciences campus of the University of Guadalajara.

For researchers, it is essential to have a record of the cough of people in Mexico, a country that passes through the highest peak of the contagion curve and that this Saturday reached 295,268 confirmed cases and 34,730 deaths since the start of the pandemic. the 28th of February.

“The idea is that from Mexico we can expand the range of coughs that they have so far. As we have the curve (of contagions) going up, unlike Europe, which is already on the decline and which only has a few outbreaks, we identified an area of opportunity to have not only the cough of people who are healthy, but with suspicion or confirmation of COVID ”, explained the person in charge of the project in Mexico.

For now they are in the stage of cough collecting where healthy or sick people of any gender can “donate” their cough so that the algorithm has as much information as possible and can make more accurate and fine analyzes.

Specialists have worked with a similar project focused on identifying Alzheimer’s.

The health contingency and the high number of infections in the world that registers more than 12.5 million cases and more than 650 thousand deaths led them to adapt this technology as a way to help people to be diagnosed without contact with other people, Vizmanos said.

In a short time the system will be available to an application that will be free to download on any mobile device so that people can take the test from home and without risk and those who want to “donate” their cough can enter the website toseconcausa.udg .mx.
