The Spanish audiovisual group Mediapro has recognized, through a statement, that employees of Imagina Media Audiovisual SL, a company in which it has a shareholding, They paid millionaire bribes to FIFA officials to obtain the television rights of the qualifying phases of the 2014, 2018 and 2022 World Cups.
“Imagina recognizes its responsibility, as a legal entity, for the criminal conduct of their representatives, and that said criminal conduct for which Imagina was responsible included the payment of bribes for the purchase of audiovisual rights for the qualification phase in the Central American and Caribbean (CONCACAF) regions for the 2014, 2018 Soccer World Championships and 2022, violating the legislation of the United States “, admits Mediapro in a note published on its website.
According to the audiovisual group itself, three employees were involved in this conduct, “two of whom pleaded guilty to paying numerous bribes, and the third, a former co-CEO of Imagina, accepted the payment of a bribe of $ 1.5 million in order to acquire the rights to the qualifiers and authorized, directed and facilitated the payment of $ 500,000 of that amount total”.
In this sense, Imagine, which ensures that fired these three company executives in December 2015, “reaffirms its acceptance of responsibility for the facts detailed in the Non-Prosecution Agreement reached with the United States Department of Justice more than two years ago, in July 2018.”
