María Eugenia Vidal returns to the political arena as OAS observer

The former governor of Buenos Aires Maria Eugenia VidaHe was appointed observer of the Organization of American States (OAS) for the legislative elections to be held in El Salvador Sunday, February 28. In these elections, El Salvador will elect the 84 legislators of the Congress, the 262 mayors of the country and the deputies of the Central American Parliament (Parlacen).

In December 2020, ehe former secretary of Strategic Affairs of the macrismo Fulvio Pompeo had been appointed by the head of the OAS, Luis Almagro as head of a mission in Guatemala.

Almagro was the axis of criticism in the region for the role of the organization in the crisis in Bolivia: the president of the Mercosur Parliament, Oscar Laborde, announced in December that he will launch an investigation against the Secretary General of the OAS for his denunciation of an alleged fraud electoral in the presidential elections of that country in October 2019, which resulted in the coup against the government of then-president Evo Morales.

In this regard, Foreign Minister Felipe Solá warned during a body assembly held in the same month that the OAS « must be containment, mediation and above all guarantor of pacification in our America. Never judge or political gendarme. Not with personal positions, and less when they end up feeding the problem that they should help solve « , referring to the institutional coup in Bolivia.

The Secretary General of the OAS indicated that it is the « sixteenth » observation mission that the OAS will ship to El Salvador.

« This data reflects, on the one hand, El Salvador’s will to have better elections and, on the other, our commitment to strengthening democratic institutions in the country and in the Americas, » he said.

Weeks after election day, the EOM, headed by Vidal, will present a final report to the OAS Permanent Council.
