It is likely that all the public and the media assumed that Mads Mikkelsen would take the role of Grindelwald in the next installment of Fantastic Animals, but the reality is that the actor himself has now denied that such information is true.
Since Johnny Depp was removed from office as the villain, because of his defeat in the British courts in favor of The Sun newspaper, things happened very quickly and information has flowed in. In the first place it was the confirmation of Depp himself where he assured that the film studio asked for his resignation. Later the news that the actor had received his full payment for having attended the recording set for just one day. And finally the announcement that Mads Mikkelsen would be the replacement in Grindelwald in the new Fantastic Animals.
However, it seems that among so much novelty, the news got out of control, since, according to the actor’s words, he has not even had any talk with Warner about it. Mikkelsen recently spoke with IGN and there he confirmed that the whole thing still belongs to the sake of rumor.
“Oh, that’s still a rumor as we speak,” Mikkelsen said. «I know as much about it as you know from the newspapers. So I’m still waiting for that call.
The actor’s name came first thanks to the Deadline site, where it was ensured that director David Yates had set up a list of actors to replace Depp in the fantasy saga. The first place was occupied, naturally, the also actor of the series Hannibal. In the middle he also assured that Warner and the actor already had previous talks, but it seems that this is not the case.
Mikkelsen is no stranger to antagonistic roles, nor to big productions. He was also the enemy villain of Benedict Cumberbatch in Doctor Strange for the Marvel superhero saga and had a prominent – though not antagonistic – role in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
While the doubt remains, the third installment of Fantastic Animals is already immersed in filming in the United Kingdom. Only Johnny Depp was the only casualty of the cast, as Eddie Redmayne, Dan Fogler, Katherine Waterston, Ezra Miller, Jude Law and Alison Sudol continue in their respective roles.
The film does not yet have an exact release date, and apparently the role of Grindelwald, still without an actor.
