While Queen Sofia has just taken up her summer quarters in Palma de Mallorca, King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain will have to wait a few more days before being able in turn to go and relax in the Balearics: before the holidays, they still have to complete their tour of the seventeen autonomous communities of the country, which began in June in the Canary Islands, as part of the deconfinement.
Wednesday July 29, 2020, two days after his trip to Navarre, it is in Cantabria, an administrative region in the north, west of Bilbao, that the royal couple was to congratulate the population for their courage in the face of the coronavirus pandemic and support the sectors most affected by the health crisis.
Felipe and Letizia, who continued her parade of looks for the occasion in a floral jumpsuit from the Uterqüe brand (which she had released two years earlier in the Dominican Republic), started their day at the national cattle market in Torrelavega , in the presence of all local officials (mayor of the city, president of the region, president of the regional parliament, etc.). A traditional dance was performed to welcome them, before the market manager took them on a guided tour through the milking area, the sales area and the cattle breed exhibition. A delegation of breeders was waiting for them to then hold a small meeting and the sovereign insisted on the vital role of the primary sector, which the pandemic has highlighted for all citizens.
After breeding, fishing: the royal couple then went to Santoña and more particularly to the port, where representatives of fishermen’s associations were among their interlocutors. We were able to see Queen Letizia very intrigued and very impressed by the work of women mending the nets, before boarding a trawler with Felipe – which remained docked. After a short stroll to a viewpoint, their visit ended in a factory for packaging fish, especially anchovies, which Santoña is famous for.
King Felipe and Queen Letizia are almost at the end of their tour of Spain: Thursday, their final stage will take place in the Principality of Asturias, a territory closely linked to the crown of which their eldest daughter Leonor is the titular princess and of which Letizia comes from. On Friday, the monarch will also take part without his wife in the Congress of Presidents of the Autonomous Communities.
