Lana and Lilly Wachowski directed the first three installments of the Matrix series. Nevertheless, Lilly does not participate in Matrix: Resurrections, fourth film in the franchise. Now the filmmaker has revealed why her sister has not also been behind the cameras on this occasion.
Lana Wachowski participated in the Berlin International Literature Festival and during an intervention explained the reasons behind Lilly’s absence. The filmmaker explained that he was grieving after the death of his parents and a friend close, and bringing back these characters who meant so much to her was a great comfort, but Lilly preferred to manage her pain differently.
“I asked Lilly if she wanted to do this, and she wanted to process her pain differently. She was in art school, on a different path, and she didn’t want to go down this path to process her pain. The story evolved, I told my wife about it and she said, ‘Oh my God, you have to. And I said, ‘Matrix, I can’t go back there.’ And I asked my friends, and we went through a decision-making process that helped me say, ‘Okay, let’s do this.’ Those people are really the reason we went back and did it again“, He recounted.
The film features the return of Neo (Keanu Reeves) and Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss). The cast is completed by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jonathan Groff, Jessica Henwick, Jada Pinkett Smith, Priyanka Chopra, Ellen Hollman, Brian J. Smith, Max Riemelt, Lambert Wilson and Andrew Caldwell. The script is written by Wachowski, Aleksandar Hemon, and David Mitchell.
The film, which will not feature the return of Laurence fishburne, hits theaters on December 17.
