In times of quarantine, the famous writer J.K. Rowling has decided to bring a bit of magic through literature with his new book titled The Ickabog.
On Twitter it was announced that the first chapter of the fairy tale has been released earlier today, May 26, 2020. For the next seven weeks, subsequent chapters will be available.
“We are delighted to announce the new J. K. Rowling book. The #TheIckabog story is now available to read online for free, ”the official Twitter account of the play reads. “Every day of the week, for the next seven weeks, a new install will be released. We hope you and your children enjoy this original fairy tale! “
From her official page, the British writer and producer explained that the idea The Ickabog arose when she was still building the magical world of Harry Potter. With multiple drafts of this tale, his plan was to release it after Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. However, he preferred to take a break and get away from children’s literature for a time, which caused the new title to be stranded in his attic for almost a decade. This is how Rowling explains it:
“After Potter’s last book, I wanted to take a break from publishing […]. The first draft of The Ickabog stayed in the attic, where it remained for almost a decade. Over time I came to think of it as a story that belonged to my two youngest children, because I read them to them in the evenings when they were little, which has always been a happy family memory.«.
Likewise, and to enjoy reading, the author emphasizes that the story lends itself to being read aloud (based on that habit when reading it to her own children). However, he also highlighted that boys and girls between 7 and 9 years old can enjoy it individually.
And what is The Ickabog about? In the words of the British, it is a story about the truth and abuse of power. Rowling explained the following:
“To avoid an obvious question: The idea came to me more than a decade ago, so it is not intended to be read as an answer to everything that is happening in the world right now. The themes are timeless and could be applied to any time or country“Ended.
Lastly, he explained that he will be publishing the following chapters virtually (between two or three) between the May 26, 2020 through July 10, 2020.
