With less than two years of the next presidential election, The Republicans still have no candidates. Within the party, the silence of François Baroin astonishes, irritates and annoys.

He prefers to keep the suspense … Less than two years before the next presidential election, François Baroin has still not announced his intentions. The leader of the Republicans even inherited an unflattering nickname from his colleagues. In the columns of Sunday newspaper at the beginning of last June, he explained that he “will clarify his intentions in the fall”. “The time is not for the presidential election. The lessons of the crisis must be learned, it is the priority for the French. Whatever my decision, I will clarify my intentions in the fall”, then declared the president of the Association of Mayors of France, reelected at the head of Troyes during the last municipal elections. But within the Republicans – still orphans of candidate -, it rumbles. The silence of François Baroin annoys the members of the party, who wonder what he expects. “That he does not speak immediately, it is understandable”, judges one of them in the columns of the Figaro.

“But that he did not take advantage of the health crisis to launch one or two well-felt initiatives is a mistake,” he added. According to him, the wait imposed by François Baroin is a bad technique that could well benefit the President of the Republic. “He lets the trains pass while Macron and the government are busy plowing our land, continues this cadre of Republicans. If we let them occupy the land on the right, we are dead.” Within the former presidential majority, the impatient climbs. And the distrust of François Baroin as well. “During the last political office, he did not speak. He did not say a word, regrets a member of the party to our colleagues from the Figaro. It was a lot of disappointment. “Especially while waiting for the decision of the politician, his colleagues do not know on which foot to dance. Should we prepare for an internal primary? Should we wait for François Baroin? Should he prefer a other policy? Questions remain unanswered.

Xavier Bertrand in the starting blocks?

For the moment, he does not intend to immediately clarify his presidential intentions. At JDD, Francois Baroin only confided that he was going to publish a book next September to feed “the debate of the ideas of [sa] political family “ : “But the question of incarnation is another subject. It is not that meeting”. On the other hand, Xavier Bertrand could well announce his inclinations more quickly. Candidate for his re-election at the head of the Hauts-de-France region, he explained to the World : “If in the region six million people do not want me to continue, in these cases I have no credit to be a candidate for the presidential election, it is obvious.” Close to the Prime Minister and the Minister of the Interior, Xavier Bertrand has fun scaring Emmanuel Macron. “If he thinks he’s cornering me by naming Castex and Darmanin, two friends, the string is a bit thick,” he joked toEurope 1.
