In recent years, Xbox Game Studios has surprised the gaming community by acquiring development studios to expand its catalog. In this process we have seen companies such as Obsidian, Ninja Theory, Double Fine and others have joined ranks of Xbox Game Studios. Many wonder if Microsoft has already taken the checkbook from Xbox to continue buying studios, but everything seems to still have the portfolio open.
In a recent interview with GameIndustri.biz, Phil Spencer, head of Xbox, discussed his strategy for buying development studios. In the talk, he made it clear that a very important point for them is to have a relationship with the studio before making the purchase. This can be seen in cases like those of Ninja Theory and Double Fine, with whom they had worked for years.
Spencer later noted that, after purchasing the studios, they make sure they have the tools they need to bring Xbox Game Studios to the firm and really feel part of it: “The top priority was to make sure the studios had things. that we needed to build the best versions of their games. That means extending some of the development times and giving them a bigger budget ”.

As you can imagine, this should not be cheap, so you may be wondering if they can continue buying studios for Xbox Game Studios. In the interview, Spencer noted that they have a lot of support from Microsoft managers for this and have not been told to slow down the acquisition. Of course, the only important thing is that everything goes at a rate in which it is sustainable.
“We have a lot of support from Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft and Amy Hood, CFO. They haven’t given any sign that we should slow down [de adquisición de estudios]Only if we go at a rate that is sustainable for us as a leadership team. We are always talking to different people, but it has to be the right opportunity.
And to you, what do you think of Microsoft’s strategy? What studios would you like to see as part of Xbox Game Studios?
