INNIO Jenbacher gas engines are prepared for use with hydrogen

Starting today, Jenbacher Type 4 gas engines are available as “Ready for H2” engines, allowing operation on up to 100% hydrogen.

Starting in 2022, all other engine types will be offered as “Ready for H2”, with the option to run on up to 25% (v) hydrogen in the pipeline gas.

All “Ready for H2” units and most currently installed Jenbacher natural gas engines can be converted to 100% hydrogen as hydrogen gas becomes more available

JENBACH, Austria, July 22, 2021– (BUSINESS WIRE) – INNIO, facilitator and critical part of the energy transition, today announced the launch of its portfolio “Ready for H2” which includes Jenbacher H2 engines fueled 100% with hydrogen. The Gas Engine Portfolio “Ready for H2” INNIO is based on a long history of innovation with more than 30 years of experience and knowledge in the use of renewable fuels and hydrogen-rich fuels, such as syngas and process gases for power generation.

INNIO’s “Ready for H2” Product Portfolio

Starting today, Jenbacher Type 4 gas engines – rated at approximately 500 to 900 kilowatts (kW) – are available to run on 100% hydrogen or on natural gas / hydrogen mixtures.

Starting in 2022, the rest of INNIO’s Jenbacher gas engines will be offered with the option “Ready for H2”, which allows operation with a volume of up to 25% hydrogen in the pipeline gas and can be easily converted to switch operation with 100% natural gas with hydrogen.

In addition, most of INNIO’s currently installed Jenbacher natural gas engine fleet can be upgraded to run on up to 25% volume hydrogen in the pipeline gas or converted to change operation from natural gas to 100% hydrogen. .

The result of decades of experience

Twenty years ago, the first 150 kW Jenbacher pilot engine ran on 100% hydrogen at a demonstration plant in northern Germany. Two decades later, in 2020, and after further demonstration projects, INNIO and HanseWerk Natur collaborated on the development of hydrogen-fueled gas engines on an industrial scale. The companies presented a flagship project that combines variable mixtures of hydrogen and natural gas, including 100% hydrogen, to power the world’s first 1 megawatt (MW) gas engine.

“I am proud of the launch of the first range of engines ‘Ready for H2’ of INNIO in the segment of energy generation from 200 kW to 10.4 MW. Our broad portfolio of innovative variable fuel Jenbacher gas engines – natural gas, carbon neutral biogas or hydrogen rich fuels – is helping pave the way to a greener energy future, “said Carlos Lange, President and CEO of INNIO. “Jenbacher gas engines currently running on natural gas can be converted to H2 fuel when hydrogen becomes more available. In this way, customers who invest in Jenbacher natural gas engines today are also investing for the future, “he adds.

With almost 90 hydrogen-related projects in 28 countries, INNIO offers more than 30 years of experience in engines fueled with up to 70% by volume of hydrogen, generating more than 250 MW. These facilities are found on all continents with various INNIO Jenbacher Type 2, Type 3, Type 4 and Type 6 gas engines.

The power of hydrogen

Green hydrogen, as an energy carrier for the storage of volatile renewable energy, can store renewable energy for months or seasons. This potential will make renewable energy sources more reliable and manageable, thereby helping accelerate the replacement of fossil fuels throughout the energy sector.

INNIO is committed to leading the deployment of H2 engines that will accelerate and ensure the transformations necessary to move from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources. INNIO Jenbacher hydrogen gas engines typically operate in a combined heat and power configuration, achieving close to 90% hydrogen utilization.

In 2021, EcoVadis awarded INNIO Jenbacher a silver medal in honor of its commitment to a climate-neutral, greener and safer energy future. This places INNIO Jenbacher among 17% of its peers who work for sustainability.
