The Mexican Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMACC) announced that the multi-award winning film I’m not here anymore, by Fernando Frías de la Parra, will be the representative of Mexico at the 93rd Oscar Awards, seeking a nomination in the category of Best International Film.
I’m not here anymore, she competed to be the Aztec representative in front of five other films: El navel de Guie’dani (Xquipi ‘Guie’dani), by Xavi Sala; This is not Berlin, by Hari Sama; Mano de trabajo, by David Zonana; New order, by Michel Franco; and I Take You With Me, by Heidi Ewing.
In a press release, the AMACC explained that the call was open from October 5 to 14 of this year. Mexican feature films could participate whose dialogues were not spoken more than 50% in English and had been commercially shown in a movie theater in Mexico for a minimum period of seven consecutive days, between October 1, 2019 and October 30, 2020. Although it should be mentioned that, due to the extraordinary situation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Hollywood Academy will accept films released in theaters and / or on streaming platforms.
The decision was made by an Election Committee, made up of Active, Emeritus, Honorary and Associate members (Nominees and Ariel Winners) of the AMACC, as well as the film directors who have represented Mexico in previous editions of the Awards. Oscar. Said Election Committee was ultimately made up of 440 members, who from October 20 to November 12 viewed the registered films, and from November 7 to 12 they carried out the vote through an electronic voting platform developed by UNAM. The results were certified before a public notary.
Fernando Frías de la Parra’s film was the top winner of the 2020 Ariel Awards, after winning ten statuettes, including those for Best Film, Best Direction and Best Acting Revelation (Juan Daniel García Treviño). The film had already been previously chosen by the AMACC to represent our country in the shortlist for Best Ibero-American film at Goya 2021.
According to the AMACC, Mexican films have been nominated nine times in the category of Best International Film (previously Best Foreign Film) by the Hollywood Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) at the Oscar . For the first time in 2019, our country took the Oscar in this shortlist with Rome, by Alfonso Cuarón.
