If we did not cut when overtaking Leclerc we would both collide

Sergio Pérez maintained his positive mark of points in the Italian Grand Prix concluding in fifth place in the 2021 edition, but the result left a bitter taste for the Red Bull Racing driver after the podium seemed to be within reach.

The Mexican started from the fourth row and at the beginning of the competition he remained conservative, thinking about taking care of the tires, getting into the group of the first six.

The strategy changed with the departure of the safety car caused by the accident between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton. Red Bull took advantage of the moment to immediately call Pérez to the pits and put the hard rubber on the Mexican to face the second half of the competition.

This situation put him in fourth place for the restart behind Ricciardo, Leclerc and Norris. The british of McLaren he attacked the Monegasque Ferrari to snatch second place from him. Checo saw the door and launched the attack on the member of the Maranello household.

But Pérez’s move to take the third position included a departure from the chicane and a cut of the curve; the stewards deemed this move illegal and penalized him five seconds over his total running time.

The Mexican crossed the finish line in third place after resisting the attacks of Valtteri Bottas, but with his punishment he dropped to fifth place.

When speaking in the middle zone about whether Red Bull had not advised him to return to the position, Checo Pérez replied that they considered they had done the right thing because if they had to keep the duel side by side with Leclerc they would have collided.

“No, I think they were analyzing it and we expected a little vision from the commissioners,” Pérez told the network. FOX Sports Latinoamérica.

“It was my corner and if I tried not to cut the track we were going to have a 100 percent safe accident. On our side we take action to not have contact. In the end this hurt us ”.

Pérez stressed again the difficulty of overtaking on the Monza track: “You have to risk a lot” and added that there was no way to compete against the McLarens: “it was impossible to catch up with the McLaren, they were quite fast and had a good pace.”

The Mexican finishes the triplet of races in Belgium, the Netherlands and Italy with two results within the points, but neither of them with a podium. This allows him to add 118 points and be fifth in the drivers’ championship, a balance that he hopes to improve.

“We did not have a good three races, they have not been on our side, but I think this weekend was positive, we improved a lot and I think we can make another leap for Russia,” he concluded.
