It will be the Asturian’s third participation in the Indiana oval

Rely on Schmidt-Peterson’s expertise to improve 2019 pace

Fernando Alonso has analyzed his options in the Indianapolis 500 less than 24 hours before the start of preparations for its 104th edition. The Spaniard, on his third attempt, hopes to be one of the candidates for victory with the merger of McLaren and Schmidt-Peterson.

Alonso was in 2017 with Andretti and Honda and in 2019 he returned to Indianapolis – although he did not qualify for the race – in the combination of McLaren and Carlin with Honda engines. In 2020, McLaren has merged with one of the best teams on the grid like Arrow Schmidt-Peterson, so the Asturian relies on the renewed structure of McLaren to storm the Triple Crown on Sunday of the following week.

“I hope that this year we will be competitive enough to fight for victory. Right now, before starting training, we are optimistic just as we were last year. We must wait to see how much pace we have,” Alonso analyzed in a wheel of press for a limited group of means between which this head has been.

“But I have no doubt that Arrow SP and its great experience will give us a plus this year, because last year we were not ready for the challenge. I trust it will be a good event for us, but we are going step by step because there are many things. to do, “he added.

Failure to qualify for the race will not be a fear for McLaren or Alonso this week – here you can find the times of the event and all its sessions – since there will be ‘only’ 33 participants in the 104th edition of the event.

“This year we are already 33 cars in qualifying, so that will take the pressure off us for qualifying and allow us to focus on the race,” said 66.

On the other hand, Alonso has regretted the absence of fans in the stands of the IMS and has acknowledged that far from taking pressure off, he is even saddened by the situation.

“The magic of the Indy 500 was the fans and having them so close. In Daytona and Sebring there was also a lot of close contact with the fans that I will miss, although I will not have to escape from the selfies when I want to go to the bathroom – laughs – , but the fact that there are no fans does not take away the pressure, we will simply miss them, “he concluded.

The Asturian has shared what his helmet design will be for the 104th edition of the Indianapolis 500, in a continuous design from the one he presented in Formula 1 in 2018, and very similar to the one he used in 2019 in Indiana.
