The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) made a series of recommendations for the correct and constant use of the mask as a fundamental step to avoid contracting and spreading COVID-19.
“Masks work best when everyone wears them, but they don’t all provide the same protection. When choosing a mask, look at how well it fits, how well it filters the air and how many layers it has, ”the document says.
There are two important ways to ensure that your mask works as well as possible:
Make sure your mask fits snugly on your face as gaps can allow air with respiratory droplets to enter and exit around the edges of the mask.
Choose a mask with layers to keep respiratory drops in and out of each other. A mask with layers will prevent more respiratory droplets from entering your mask or escaping from your mask if you are sick.
What to do
Choose a mask with a nasal wire
A nasal wire is a strip of metal across the top of the mask, preventing air from escaping through the top of the mask.
Bend the nose wire over your nose to fit your face.
Use a mask adjuster or brace
Use a mask adjuster or holder over a disposable mask or cloth mask to prevent air from leaking around the edges of the mask.
Check that it fits your nose, mouth and chin perfectly
Check for gaps by cupping your hands around the outer edges of the mask and make sure no air is flowing from the area near the eyes or from the sides of the mask.
If the mask fits you well, you will feel warm air coming through the front of the mask and you may be able to see the mask material go in and out with each breath.
Add material layers
Wear a fabric mask that has several layers of fabric.
You can wear a disposable mask under a cloth mask. The second mask should push the edges of the inner mask against the face.
Make sure you can see and breathe easily
Knot and fold earmuffs from a 3-layer face mask
Tie a knot in the earmuffs of a 3-layer mask where they meet the edge of the mask. Fold and tuck unnecessary material under the edges.
What not to do
Do not combine two disposable masks. Disposable masks are not designed to fit well and wearing more than one will not improve the fit.
Also, do not combine a KN95 mask with any other mask. Use only one KN95 mask at a time.
