SEVILLE, Spain (AP) – To the beat of Erling Haaland’s double, Borussia Dortmund interrupted Sevilla’s nine-win streak on Wednesday with a reliable 3-2 away win in the first leg of the round of 16 of the Champions League.
The hosts took an early lead with Suso Fernández’s score.
But Dortmund reacted with Mahmoud Dahoud’s goal and Haaland’s double before half-time at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán stadium. Luuk de Jong signed the second goal for Sevilla in the aftermath.
“In the first half, except for the goal so early, everything went exactly as we had envisioned,” said Dortmund captain Marco Reus. “We were a little behind normal, but we were very compact. We won the ball well, we advanced into danger zones and took the advantage. The first half was very good ”.
The victory halted Sevilla’s hot streak, while Dortmund raised their heads after a series of stumbles in the Bundesliga that left manager Edin Terzic reeling on the tightrope.
The second leg will be played on March 9 in Germany.
In the other round of 16 game played on Wednesday, Porto beat Juventus 2-1 at home.
Suso opened the scoring for Sevilla in the seventh minute, with a shot from outside the area that was deflected by two defenders before going to the nets. The visitors leveled at 19, when Dahoud fired from the forehand and from long range to an angle.
Haaland, 20, put the visitors in front in the 27th minute, defining inside the area after a wall play with Jadon Sancho. The Norwegian extended the lead in the 43rd minute with a point-blank shot after a quick counter, to reach 18 goals in 13 Champions League games.
Haaland is now second only to Kylian Mbappé as the player with the most goals in the tournament before he turned 21. The 22-year-old Mbappé, who scored a hat-trick Tuesday in Paris Saint-Germain’s 4-1 win in Barcelona, scored 19 goals before turning 21.
“We had a good plan,” Haaland said. “Edin has been good and I have talked a lot with him. He told me that today would be my game, that I would have my chances and I did. It was an important victory ”.
De Jong approached Sevilla with a goal on a set piece in the 84th minute.
