The Guatemalan security forces captured this Sunday (08/09/2020) an alleged drug trafficker with an extradition order to the United States, required by a Texas court for producing and transporting cocaine from several countries in America.

The Guatemalan Public Ministry (Prosecutor’s Office) detailed in a press release the arrest of the suspect, identified by the authorities as Fredy Rolando Orozco de León, 43 years old. The detainee « is required to appear for trial in the United States, derived from an accusation filed on September 11, 2019 in the United States District Court for the Eastern District for two charges, » said the Guatemalan Prosecutor’s Office.

The accusations against Orozco de León in the United States are for the production and distribution of five kilos of cocaine, in addition to conspiracy to manufacture the same illegal substance. According to the Prosecutor’s Office, there is « reasonable cause to believe that » the cocaine « would be illegally imported into the United States. »

The Public Ministry added that the investigation against the detainee has been « carried out since 2008 » and that Orozco de León « has manufactured and transported large quantities of cocaine from Colombia to Ecuador, Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala and Mexico. and then to the US.  »

Orozco de León’s arrest was recorded on a street in western Guatemala City, while he was traveling in his luxury vehicle. The authorities also indicated that on February 2, 2016, they seized a shipment of 1,272 kilos of cocaine owned by Orozco de León, intercepted in a « semi-submersible » on the Pacific coast of Panama. The extradition of Orozco de León to the United States will remain in the hands of a Guatemalan court.
