The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic increased in Mexico and in the world the demand for gelatin used in food supplements and vitamins with which people raise their defenses to protect themselves from the coronavirus.

This situation led to the production of 21,180 tons of gelatin in Mexico in 2020, a figure 7.3 percent higher than that reported a year earlier, reaching the largest volume since the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) has registered.

In Mexico, there are around 10 companies that produce gelatin, among which Gelita, Coloidales Duche, Helm, Progel Mexicana and Grenetina Regia stand out.

Ana De Nadai, director of sales and marketing for Mexico and Central America at Gelita, said that 2020 was a complicated year, because the consumption of gelatin fell in the food sector, but as of September the high demand from the pharmaceutical sector reversed the trends .

« Gelatin consumption fell in the food segment, but there was a very important increase in the pharmaceutical sector, speaking of soft capsules because people were more concerned with their health, » he said.

In an interview with El Financiero, he said that in the middle of last year they invested to increase their production by 20 percent, because in addition to serving the domestic market, they also raised gelatin exports.

« Since September 2020, we have seen a recovery in another market that is part of the nutrition and health segment, which is specifically collagen, because we saw a recovery in that market and now in 2021 it is also in high demand, » he said.

Coloidales Duche is also one of the most important manufacturers in Mexico of beef, pork and fish gelatin, its plant has an installed capacity to manufacture 30 tons per month.

This company sells to food supplement companies, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and for the industry that manufactures pet food, according to information on its portal.

The value of production in Mexico reached a value of 2,552.9 million pesos, 11 percent more than that registered in 2019, the highest increase and value since it has been registered by INEGI; This figure was influenced by external demand as it raised the value of the input.

« The global demand for gelatin will increase due to the COVID-19 crisis, the global market for gelatin is estimated at 516.8 thousand metric tons in 2020, and it is projected to reach a revised size of 696.1 thousand metric tons by 2027 », they estimate ReportLinker analysts.

Despite the fact that the country has a deficit in gelatin, only 7,203 tons of this input were imported between January and November of last year, 16.1 percent lower than that registered in the same period of 2019.

While 2,232 tons were exported, 53.6 percent higher than that reported in the first eleven months of a previous year.

Ana De Nadai said that the recovery of tourism will boost the production of gelatin, because in addition to being used for gelatin, it is used for foods such as yogurt.

« We see that some market segments had more opportunities to recover or continue operating under the new circumstances (…) Some clients are trying to resume projects, so we do expect that 2021 will have higher sales than last year, » he commented.

Gelatin is a protein that is extracted from collagen from animal bones, skins and cartilage such as beef and fish, through acidic or alkaline hydrolysis processes.

It is very easily assimilated by the human body and does not contain carbohydrates, fats or cholesterol, which makes it a vehicle of nutrients and an ideal ingredient in a balanced daily diet.

Experts explain that it is a very versatile product that is used not only in food and pharmaceutical preparations, but also in the photographic and automotive industries.
