from Kabul to Tokyo, an Olympic destination

ARTE met Masomah Ali Zada in Kabul in 2015. At that time, she was part of the women’s cycling team and was fighting for emancipation through sport. Threatened by the Taliban, the young woman and her family had to leave Afghanistan and settle as refugees in France.

Upon her arrival in the European country, Masomah was received by Patrick and Thierry Communal, two cycling enthusiasts who accompanied and supported her.

Masomah continued training and was selected as a member of the International Olympic Committee refugee team to participate in the Tokyo Olympics.
