The NBA’s coveted free agent Gordon Hayward is targeting the Charlotte Hornets in a deal that ESPN reported will be worth $ 120 million over four years.
Hayward’s agents, Priority Sports, confirmed the move on their Twitter account with a post that read “Congratulations to @gordonhayward for agreeing to the terms with @hornets!”
Hayward became a free agent Thursday when he turned down a $ 34.2 million player option with the Boston Celtics for next season.
The player had signed a four-year, $ 127.8 million deal with the Celtics in 2017, but his tenure in Boston was overshadowed by a foot and ankle injury he sustained minutes after his regular season debut with the club.
He missed the rest of that season, and after an irregular 2018-2019 campaign he averaged 17.5 points, 6.4 rebounds and 4.1 assists in 52 games of the 2019-2020 campaign interrupted by the coronavirus pandemic.
Hayward was out of the game again in the playoffs in the NBA’s quarantine bubble in Orlando, spraining his right ankle in the opening game of Boston’s first-round series against Philadelphia.
He returned during the Eastern Conference final, in which the Celtics lost in six games to the Miami Heat.
The NBA’s free agency negotiation period began Friday, but deals cannot be finalized until the signing period begins Sunday.
Both the New York Knicks and the Indiana Pacers were reportedly in the running for their services.
