Former Senator Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) Signed up to lobby a Chinese company last week, but decided to cancel the registration hours after her registration was reported.
« Due to the intense response to my registration, I have determined that my ongoing work has become a negative distraction from my effort to preserve American jobs and improve the company, » said Boxer. he wrote on Twitter Tuesday afternoon. « Therefore, I have canceled. »
Daily Caller first reported that Boxer registered as a foreign agent for Hikvision USA, the subsidiary of a Chinese surveillance company that has been sanctioned by the US government.
Hikvision was accused of participating in human rights violations and abuses against Muslim minorities in Xinjiang, China.
In October 2019, the Commerce Department announced a restriction on the export of US technologies to 28 Chinese entities, including Hikvision, due to such involvement.
On November 12, 2020, President Donald Trump signed an executive order prohibiting American companies or individuals from investing in Hikvision and other Chinese companies.
Boxer spent 24 years in the Senate. He had also been a member of the House of Representatives for 10 years. She was the predecessor of Senator Kamala Harris (D-Calif.).
In his registration form (pdf) with the Department of Justice under FARA (Foreign Agent Registration Act), Boxer indicated that he would provide “strategic consulting services” to Hikvision.
Boxer also revealed that he donated $ 500 to Biden’s presidential inauguration last month.
Per the FARA requirement, registries must disclose political donations made within 60 days of registration.
Axios reported that Biden’s Inauguration Committee decided to refund Boxer’s donation.
« He tells me that the Chinese Communist Party has completely infiltrated the American political system, especially the Democratic Party in California, » China expert Gordon Chang said Tuesday night when Fox News anchor Tucker Carlson he asked.
“Because you don’t just have Barbara Boxer, you have Dianne Feinstein with China issues. And then, of course, the person you are referring to, Eric Swalwell, who has not yet adequately explained his relationship with an alleged administrative agent of State Security, ”Chang added.
Swalwell has said he did nothing wrong. His office, which has not responded to repeated requests for comment, has told the media that Swalwell cut ties with Fang nearly six years ago.
Chang noted that David Vitter, the former Republican senator from Louisiana, also signed up to work for Hikvision.
« This means that we have to remove China from our political system, we have to cut our ties with the regime, » continued Chang. « We know that they are exploiting the opening of our political system to overthrow our government. »
