A few weeks ago, NetherRealm Studios and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment confirmed that more content would come to Mortal Kombat 11, thanks to the Aftermath expansion. This DLC included 3 new characters: Sheeva, Fujin and RoboCop. To the surprise of many, some absent fighters, such as Mileena, were not added. Although this may be rare for many, there is a reason why they have not been added to the title.

In an interview with Eurogamer, NetherRealm Studios creative director and co-creator of the Mortal Kombat franchise, Ed Boon, spoke about the process of choosing the characters for a new installment, explaining why no fighters have appeared that the fans ask a lot.

In case you missed it: This is how RoboCop will fight in the Aftermath expansion.

NetherRealm wants to keep the fighting team fresh

According to the developer, the team selects the character squad taking into account several criteria and one of them is the fighters’ period of inactivity. Boon says that from time to time they must bring back characters that are not so common in the franchise. As an example is Fujin, who was a playable fighter more than 20 years ago, apart from pointing out that alternating the characters is essential to keep all the fighters created so far in force and not only the most popular ones.

“I think, after years, we have around 80 Mortal Kombat characters. The reason we added Fujin is because it hasn’t been featured in a game in a long time. Frankly, I think a decent number of players will say, ‘Who is Fujin?’ If we just did Mileena, Kitana, Jade, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Rain, you know, all these characters, I think they would wear out after a while. We have to give the characters a break from time to time. So when they come back, it will be a big thing, ”Boon explained.

The studio looks for the opportunity to bring back old characters

The developer mentioned that it is also important that in terms of gameplay it also represents something substantial for the game. In this sense, he said that Fujin made the team designers think about some interesting possibilities related to his movement in the air or the use of his sword.

Additionally, Fujin and Sheeva are characters that have not had as much prominence over the years. Fujin in particular, he’s only appeared in Mortal Kombat 4 and Armageddon, but he’s never had a starring role, so we delved into his story and his relationship with his brother, Raiden, and all of that, so it’s great, “said Boon. .

Could Mileena and other fighters come up with a new DLC?

However, almost like Sub-Zero, Kitana or Scorpion, Mileena has an important place in the Mortal Kombat community, so she does not lose hope of seeing a fighter. In one part of the interview, after being questioned if there will be more DLC characters (including Mileena), Boon laughed and mentioned that he cannot confirm or deny anything after the Aftermath expansion.

What did you think of Ed Boon’s statements? Would you like Mileena and other characters to return? Tell us in the comments.

The Aftermath expansion will debut on May 26 and will include a story starring several fighters from Earth, including Fujin. Also, as part of a free update coming at the same time as the expansion, NetherRealm Studios will bring back the Friendships.
