Nine months to go 2021 elections. However, the names that will seek to be candidates in what will be the largest elections in the history of Mexico are beginning to be glimpsed, according to Lorenzo Cordova, president of National Electoral Institute (INE).

Sinaloa, one of the 15 entities that will vote for a new governor next year, it has several candidates from the three strongest political parties. However, there is one person who has been gaining ground, according to the latest surveys: Gerardo Vargas Landeros, national coordinator of the northwest area of the Progressive Social Networks association, and who has openly said that he wants Morena’s endorsement.

“(I am a) Proud father of a family, in love with my State and its people. I am passionate about serving Sinaloa and I will always work for a better Mexico, ”says the Instagram account of the former Secretary General of the Government.

His main competitor is the Morenoist senator Ruben Rocha Moya. Two polls (Mitofsky and Massive Caller), carried out in mid-August, place the legislator as the main character to win the governorship.

Mitofsky places Rocha Moya with 29.3% approval of respondents to be Morena’s candidate, while Vargas Laderos has 20.2 percent. Massive Caller points out that the legislator has 28.9% and his rival 19%.

Unlike the coordinator of Progressive Social Networks, party that could not get the INE registration last week, the senator has not confirmed his wish for Morena’s candidacy. A month ago he left doubts about his position on this issue, because in a conference he denied that he wanted the candidacy, although he later left the option open.

As for the other competitors, there is the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), who is in the second place of preference to win the elections in Sinaloa. The two pollsters agree that inside the party is at the head Jesus Valdés Palazuelos, president of the organization in the state.

Unlike Morena, the PRI has two candidates who overshadow the leader in the polls. According to Mitofsky, Aaron Irizar López persecutes Palazuelos with 7.5% of the votes of the respondents, but Sergio Felix Torres, Secretary of Fisheries of the entity, is in second place (15.4%) of preferences to occupy the candidacy of the party that is currently in power in the state.

Everything seems to be that the decision will depend on the current governor Quirino Ordaz, whose support will be vital to get the candidatur. Although the data from the two surveys and a third (Digital Demo from early September) indicate that Morena has everything to win in 2021 in the entity.

The candidates for the candidature already mentioned they will have to position themselves in front of the voters list that has not yet decided who they will support. According to the three pollsters, there is a percentage between 14 and 21 percent of the people who have not decided who to cast their vote.

For any of the candidates who wins the governorship next year, there is a complicated picture in the state. The economic crisis, the lag by COVID-19 epidemic and the violence in the state are some of the issues that should be on the aspirants’ agenda.

The IPM notes that the state came out of the five most violent entities in the country. In addition, the SESNSP indicates that its crime incidence rate from January to July of this year is 12,503 cases, well below the first three places (State of Mexico, Mexico City and Jalisco).
