In case you don’t know, Facebook emerged as a project at Harvard University with the intention of connecting students and keeping them abreast of campus information. Well now the social network decided to go back to its origins and launched a platform for university students to have a private place to connect with their classmates, join groups, discover upcoming events and receive updates from their school administration.

Under the name Facebook Campus, those interested in being part of this new social network require a school email address to join. The good thing is that they will not need to download a new app, they will be able to see all the information available from their university within their Facebook profile as the new option will live within a dedicated section from a tab at the bottom of the screen or from the menu “More” next to Dating, Games and News.

“We wanted to create a product where it was easy for classmates to get to know each other, foster new relationships, and also easily start conversations. We really think that Campus is more relevant than ever right now. Because of COVID-19 we see that many students do not return to campus in the fall. Now classes are being held online and students are trying to react to this new normal of what it’s like to connect with clubs and organizations that interest them, when they are not together, ”explained Charmaine Hung, Facebook campus product manager. .

Beyond that, specialists have noted that this could be a strategy of the social network to re-engage younger users on its platform, as Facebook has reportedly been losing control over the younger demographic. He has preferred options like YouTube, Snapchat and Instagram. In fact, a 2019 survey by Edison Research indicated that Facebook had lost 15 million users since 2017, with the biggest drop coming from the 12-34 age group.

How does it work?

For now, Facebook Campus will only be available at about 30 colleges and universities in the United States, although the company said it plans to expand the platform over time.

Students who are part of a university compatible with the tool will receive a notification on their Facebook account to join the new platform. Students will be identified either by the information in their profile or because there is enough data to assume that they are students, for example, if they regularly visit the Facebook page of an admitted university.

In addition, to encourage young people to join this category, the social network will carry out campaigns in which it will give away products such as t-shirts and towels.

To enter, in addition to requiring an .edu email address, Facebook Campus will request to know the year of graduation, which should not be more than five years ago.

After registering, students create their profile on Campus to add college-specific details that Facebook says won’t appear anywhere else on the social network. They will be able to include information like their campus, graduation year, dorm, major, and classes they are taking.

Some of the universities that have a deeper association with Facebook have already signed up to post updates and news on the feed and it is expected that it will encourage several student leaders to join the network.

In this way, within the tab, students will also be able to discover and join groups and events at their school, even creating buying or selling groups, and looking for roommates.

Facebook Campus also has its own private chat section, which is kept separate from Facebook and Messenger. The company also informed that it will not include advertising in this category.
