Liverpool. Everton caused another embarrassment to Liverpool during the campaign in which their dream of revalidating the title was ruined, by winning 2-0, to achieve their first triumph at Anfield since 1999.
The defending champions suffered their fourth consecutive home loss. It’s their worst streak since 1923 and has sunk them 16 points behind leader Manchester City.
Now Liverpool surpass Everton only on goal difference. And the Toffees have played one less game.
Everton had not beaten Liverpool on any field since 2010. Those coached by Carlo Ancelotti won the Merseyside Classic without allowing a single fan to enter the stands, due to the pandemic.
The visitors’ ambitions to win were clear from the start, when just two and a half minutes later a ball badly rejected with the head by the defense was left at the feet of James Rodríguez, who from outside the area and with great vision, leaked a pass that the Brazilian Richarlison reached and gave him a goal with a cross shot in front of goalkeeper Alisson Becker.
Liverpool later lost Henderson through injury. And he never threatened goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.
Any hope of a reaction was scuttled when Trent Alexander-Arnold dropped substitute Dominic Calvert-Lewin. Gyfi Sigurdsson converted the resulting penalty kick in the 83rd minute.
Regarding the Champions League area, Liverpool is three points behind Chelsea, which a few hours earlier drew 1-1 in Southampton (13).
From 11 steps, Mason Mount allowed Chelsea to rescue the tie against Southampton that conjured a six-game losing streak in the Premier League.
Takumi Minamino finished with precision to put the hosts ahead in the 33rd minute.
In other matches on Saturday, Fulham edged bottom Sheffield United 1-0 and Albion drew 0-0 at Burnley.
