Evangelion: 3.0 + 1.0 Thrice Upon a Time has been the victim of multiple delays over the years due to other commitments made by the director and creator of the franchise Hideaki Anno. The latest installment of the Rebuild of Evangelion tetralogy would finally hit theaters on June 27, 2020, but its launch had to be postponed due to the increase in COVID-19 cases in Japan. Last October, the film was rescheduled for a release on January 23, 2021.
A week ago, the Japanese government declared a new state of emergency in the Tokyo area due to the spike in COVID-19 infections. On Wednesday, Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga announced that the measure will be extended to a total of 11 prefectures. The state of emergency will be in effect until Sunday, February 7. Theaters will be able to continue their operations at 50% of their capacity and close at 8:00 p.m. everyday.
Rebuild of Evangelion is a cinematic retelling of the events of the 1995 original Neon Genesis Evangelion series. At the moment, the saga is made up of the following films: Evangelion: 1.0 You Are [Not] Alone (2007), Evangelion: 2.0 You Can [Not] Advance (2009) and Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo (2012). On December 17, Studio Khara confirmed that production of Evangelion: 3.0 + 1.0 Thrice Upon a Time was complete.
The original series and films Evangelion: Death (True) ² and The End of Evangelion are available on Netflix. Meanwhile, the first three Rebuild of Evangelion films will premiere on January 27 on Prime Video.
