Ecuador registered in the last 24 hours 1,641 infections of the new disease
Coronavirus (COVID-19), for a total of 269,860 cases in more than 11 months of pandemic in the South American country, according to the report of the Ministry of Public Health (MSP) published Thursday.
The figures are part of an exponential increase in infections that the country has registered since last January due to citizen relaxation and crowds.
At the national level, where the virus is transmitted by the community, nine of the 24 Ecuadorian provinces present the highest numbers of infections to date; however, Pichincha (north center) and Guayas (southwest) lead the statistics with 94,664 and 34,137 positive cases, respectively.
In the last 24 hours, Pichincha registered 621 new infections, while Guayas 277, according to the figures issued by the MSP.
Most of the new cases documented in these provinces are concentrated in their capitals, Quito and Guayaquil, the largest cities in the country.
Quito, the current epicenter of the pandemic in Ecuador, registered 607 infected in the last day, while Guayaquil 152, in the midst of a complex situation of the hospital system whose capacity reached the limit due to the sustained increase in cases of Coronavirus.
The local authorities regret the lack of public awareness that still persists in the country in the face of a virus that has proven to be dangerous and, therefore, it is necessary to comply with biosecurity measures and reinforce self-care.
In an attempt to curb the spread of the virus, various restrictions adopted by local governments are in effect throughout the country.
In this context, the MSP is advancing with the pilot plan for vaccination against Covid-19 with the inoculation since last January 21 to health personnel and elderly people in geriatric centers.
The « zero phase » also started with a first batch of 8,190 doses of the VaccineDelivered on Jan. 20 by US pharmaceutical company Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech.
The country received a second shipment of 16,380 doses of the same vaccine on Wednesday, in accordance with the schedule presented by Pfizer to Ecuador, the MSP said.
The delivered doses are part of a batch of 86,000 that Pfizer has agreed to ship to the Andean country.
The portfolio specified that with this second remittance one hundred percent of the first and second doses will be completed to the initial target group of the pilot plan, that is, 6,228 Ecuadorians from 99 public and private hospitals.
In addition, adults over 18 public and private gerontological centers in the country and their staff.
