Public health experts agreed that the combination of vaccines against Covid-19 could be used only in emergency cases and only those of Pfizer and Moderna, according to recommendations of the Center for Contagious Diseases of the United States.
« In emergency cases, you can mix Pfizer and Moderna, since both are messenger RNA, » said Gustavo Oláiz, coordinator of the Center for Research on Policies, Population and Health at UNAM.
Apparently it is better to extend this period and it is also good news, since it allows more people to be vaccinated, « said Oláiz.
The United States and England are currently studying vaccine combinations.
The infectologist Alejandro Macías specified that in England they are testing the combination of the AztraZeneca vaccine with that of Pfizer.
Tests are done to see if the AstraZeneca and Pfizer vaccines can be combined. Photo: .
« If they could be combined, it would facilitate the logistics of the application throughout the country, considering that there will not be a single provider that can fight, not only to the demand of Mexico but of the entire world, » he considered.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention updated federal vaccine recommendations on January 21 to allow in « exceptional situations » a second dose from a different manufacturer.
On the other hand, the University Commission for the attention of the coronavirus emergency of the UNAM, recently indicated that as a result of the shortage in the drug that Pfizer developed, the Mexican health authorities have resorted to other options to follow up on the vaccination plan against Covid-19, such as the acquisition of the Russian Sputnik V formula. This despite the uncertainty generated by the lack of information supported by phase 3 studies, which confirm its safety and efficacy.
The Sputnik V vaccine, which has been developed by the Gamaleya Center in Moscow, Russia, has already been approved since the beginning of February by the Federal Commission for Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris) for emergency use in Mexico. This formula is already applied in Argentina, Algeria, Belarus, United Arab Emirates, Hungary, Palestine, Paraguay, Pakistan, Russia, Serbia, Turkmenistan and Venezuela.
Sputnik is applied in two that are totally different, because they are produced with different adenoviruses. Its developers have stated that it is 91.4% effective after the second application. This is a challenge when it comes to logistics for production and for distribution. The Gamaleya Center itself accepted that it will present limitations limitations to produce the second dose, warned Dr. Mauricio Rodríguez Álvarez, spokesman for the University Commission for Emergency Attention against Coronavirus.
For Friday, February 19, the first shipment with 200 thousand doses of the Sputnik V vaccine is expected to arrive in Mexico.
