Distance education and home office drive demand for PCs and tablets

The coronavirus pandemic in Mexico, which forced students to take classes virtually and office workers to do home offices, increased the demand for personal computers and tablets by taking them to their highest level in the last six years.

This benefited firms such as Samsung, Sanborns, Microsoft and Lenovo, which experienced an increase in the demand for technological products.

Between June and July 2020, the period in which technology companies generate inventory, just over a million of these equipment were imported to Mexico, an increase of 7.5 percent compared to what was registered in the same period of last year, being the first increase for a similar period since 2014, show data from the Ministry of Economy.

Diego Altuzar, senior director of sales and operations of the Information and Mobility division of Samsung Mexico, reported that in the third quarter of the year, tablet sales rose 400 percent annually.

“This is very important because it was because of the back to school in the middle of the pandemic. We knew that would happen because it happened on other continents, that’s why we armed ourselves with a lot of inventory, “he said in an interview.

He stressed that for this reason they sought alliances with banks and stores to achieve offers and months without interest.

In a conference, Angélica Piña, director of investor relations of Grupo Carso, commented that its commercial division Grupo Sanborns registered that, in the period July-September of this year, the sales of big-ticket were positively influenced by the “Back to school ”.

“With a good performance in technology and electronic items; not so fashion, where there was less demand for clothing and footwear, because the classes are not face-to-face ”, he highlighted.

Additionally, Diego Altuzar revealed that, in terms of cell phones, those that were in a price range of 4 thousand to 8 thousand pesos also had a good performance, because there are people who cannot acquire higher value equipment due to their level of entry.

The Competitive Intelligence Unit (CIU) revealed that, even in the midst of the pandemic, during the second quarter of this year the market in Mexico surpassed for the first time the 90 percent barrier in access to smartphones among the total mobile lines to reach a level of 91.6 percent, with an accounting of 109 million smart mobile phones in the hands of Mexicans.

“A trend that was predicted for four years, based on the desire of Mexicans to get an intelligent mobile device, being the main link in daily life and connectivity,” they indicated.

They added that the bulk of users make significant efforts to acquire better devices; However, even though the offer includes devices from one thousand to 60 thousand pesos, in the country there are still users who cannot purchase a smart mobile device.

“This implies a great challenge for closing the connectivity gap, even more pressing in times of confinement, where smartphones became the axis of connectivity,” he said.

Before the end of the year, Diego Altuzar, senior director in the Information and Mobility division of Samsung Mexico, considered that “El Buen Fin” and the holidays could help them recover part of what they stopped selling due to the pandemic.

“Our projection is to have double digits in sales, we are very positive that we can reach the third quarter indexes because we believe that many people wait for this time to have the best benefits, and we are prepared to do it with different financial activities with something important to end users, ”he commented.

He added that in the third quarter its revenues from the entire Mobility division rose 20 percent annually, well above the global average that the firm had of 6 percent.

“This happened due to the reopening of stores. I think that many people were left with the desire to buy and did not do it because they do not believe in the online part, which they were left waiting for the stores ”, he commented.
