2020 may not be the best for all those who love live music, because it was already very clear to us that we will not have concerts or festivals for a while. Yet the industry has made up for it by planning big things during these days of lockdown, releasing grooves almost every day. But there are other artists who prepared very special projects, like the good Martin Gore.
Since the release of his fourteenth studio album, Spirit in 2017 and the huge promotional tour, Depeche Mode took a creative break. Although they did not disappear completely, because a few days ago entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame –Virtually–, but to be honest, all their fans have been waiting for years for the legendary group to release new music or to announce their next album.

Martin Gore releases his second solo EP
But while we hold out for that to happen, Martin Gore has a huge surprise for us. It is well known that he is one of the creative minds within the band and the composer of some of their hits, however, occasionally he takes a break to work alone and the perfect example are Counterfeit² and MG, the pair of solo albums the British musician has released over the years.
And since you can’t do anything else with Depeche Mode for now, Martin took advantage of the time in quarantine to compose his second EP, which will be called The Third Chimpanzee. And yes, as the name suggests, it is a set of five songs where Gore explores that somewhat more impulsive musical side and not as thought out as what we are used to, using synthesizers to create dense and very basic melodies.
According to SPIN, in a statement Martin Gore himself explained the nature of this record material: “The first song I recorded had a sound that was not human. It sounded like a primate. I decided to call it ‘Howler’, after a monkey. Then when it came time to name the EP, I remembered reading the book ‘The Rise and Fall of the Third Chimpanzee’. It all made sense to call it that, since the EP was made by one of the third chimpanzees ”.
To start warming up, Gore released the first single from the EP called “Mandrill”. This is a song that judging by what he himself mentioned about this album, could completely encompass the concept, because it is a musical passage where Several synths and a dark drum machine play for almost four minutes, creating a somewhat gloomy atmosphere but for some reason you can’t stop listening.
The Third Chimpanzee, Martin Gore’s new EP will come to us on January 29, 2021. But while we wait for it to premiere, ca
