Cuba once again set a record for positive cases of the disease Covid-19 in one day, by reporting 650 people affected and four deaths, increasing to 18,151 those infected and 170 people dead since the pandemic was declared last March.
Guantánamo, the easternmost province of Cuba, was the territory that reported the most cases of contagion, announcing 206 infected, and becoming the province « with the highest incidence rate and the highest level of transmission, » according to statements by Dr. Francisco Durán, National Director of Epidemiology of the Ministry of Public Health (Minsap), at a press conference.
The four deceased persons were found to be two women, aged 72 and 103 respectively, residents of the provinces of Santiago de Cuba (east) and Havana (west); and two men aged 64 and 78 years, both residents of Matanzas (west), in all complicated cases with a history of other diseases such as high blood pressure and diabetes.
By provinces, the eastern Guantánamo reported 206 positive cases to Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, followed by Havana (153), Santiago de Cuba (68), Cienfuegos (63), Ciego de Ávila (37), Matanzas (46), Artemisa (16), Mayabeque (14) and Villa Clara (12).
Other affected regions were Sancti Spíritus (11), Pinar del Río (8), Camagüey (6), Las Tunas (4), and Granma and the special municipality of Isla de la Juventud (3 in each).
So far, 46 people are receiving services in intensive therapy rooms, 11 of them in critical condition, including a 12-year-old boy; and 35 in serious condition, four of them minors.
Dr. Durán also confirmed that in the last day there were 363 medical discharges, and so far 13,543 people have recovered.
Since March 11, the World Health Organization (WHO) has classified the disease as a pandemic Covid-19, caused by Coronavirus SARS-CoV-2.
Globally, 93,194,922 cases are reported, while 2,014,729 people have died from the disease, according to the latest data provided by the WHO.
