COVID-19 : The coronavirus variant identified for the first time in Brazil is identified in Mexico

(CNN Spanish) – The Institute for Epidemiological Diagnosis and Reference (InDRE) of Mexico confirmed this Monday the circulating presence in that country of the variant of covid-19 E484K, identified for the first time in Brazil, which was detected by the University of Guadalajara (UdeG).

Through a statement, Dr. José Francisco Muñoz Valle, rector of the University Center for Health Sciences of the University of Guadalajara and coordinator of the Health Situation Room for covid-19, pointed out that among the variants that were identified the that “most worries” is E484K, because it has been associated with a decrease in virus neutralization by up to ten times.

In addition, they added that the university initiated an epidemiological surveillance system in samples from positive patients with the aim of applying effective control strategies against the coronavirus. This decision was made because InDRE recommended follow-up.

The specialist pointed out that more than 1,000 samples corresponding to the metropolitan area of ​​Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta were analyzed, where four cases were confirmed. He added that there are nine others to be validated, so he considered that it is still not enough to know the implications.

Muñoz Valle explained that it is important to know how the behavior of symptoms occurs and added that, for the moment, the cases that were detected are not serious, although there are few samples.

On January 29, the UdeG announced that four people in Mexico had tested positive for the E484K variant found in Brazil.
