COVID-19 : Coronavirus | The serious consequences if a new confinement is not chosen

Spain registered 25,438 new coronavirus infections and 408 deaths in the last 24 hours, as notified this Tuesday by the Ministry of Health. Some data that are produced by having celebrated Christmas without further measures, according to Alberto Infante, professor of International Health at the National School of Health of the Carlos III Institute. “Responsibility is shared between administrations and citizens, because we all knew that, to go ahead with the plans christmas celebration, would inevitably have consequences that he has finally had ”, he stated during an interview on ‘Hoy por Hoy’, on Cadena Ser.

Among these consequences of which he speaks, the third wave stands out, which arrives “on a floor of healthcare pressure and higher fatigue than when the second wave arrived, therefore, our room for maneuver before reaching healthcare collapse it is much smaller”. In this sense, it considers that measures that currently exist, such as curfews, early closings of the hotel or trade, and limitation in the number of people gathered, are insufficient and “They are behind, once again, the advance of the virus, when they should have been ahead”.

While acknowledging that they are likely to have some positive effect on the curve, because it can slow down the growth rate of the virus, “they will not be enough to bend her, given the circumstances in which we are ”. “Therefore, we are going to attend a January very bad in terms of pressure on the ucis, healthcare pressure and mortality, it must be said that part of it would have been avoidable with the measures that many of us proposed before Christmas ”, he added.

Advantages of a new confinement

After criticizing the current measures, Infante joins the numerous experts who recommend the establishment of a new home confinement across the country, contradicting the words of the Ministry of Health, Salvador Illa, who insists that the current measures can bend the curve. “I’m not so optimistic,” says the expert, who suggests that the isolation should not be as long as the first, “but two or three weeks that would have the advantage of reversing this situation in the short term”. Otherwise, alert, “it will be difficult to reverse it.”

Thus, the relationship between the fatigue of professionals and administrations and the ability to start the vaccination process with the forcefulness, extension and speed that this requires. “They are two related variables, doing a short confinement now that clears the way and allows focusing efforts on vaccinating. This would have two additional benefits: we would lower the costs of the third wave, and we would increase vaccination capacities to be in a better situation in a month or a month and a half ”.

Regarding the direction of citizens to a possible confinement, Infante has expressed his confidence that the measure would be well received: “Surveys show that citizens do understand that strong measures are taken provided they are effective and their purpose and duration are clearly stated. They understand that it has a cost, but they are willing to assume it ”.

Inequality in the vaccination campaign

“The start of the vaccination campaign has been terrible”, has criticized the expert in International Health, arguing that “it was known which vaccines were going to arrive, when and what conditions they had,” so “Much better preparedness measures could have been taken”.

In addition, it ensures that “There is not much rational explanation” for the inequality in the rhythms that each community has been acquiring, because, although in some they have already increased significantly, in others they are still very slow. “There is no explanation that Madrid, no matter how much snow has fallen, be in a 30% and Castilla la Mancha, where it has snowed the most, exceed the 60%”.
