COVID-19 : Coronavirus | Pfizer raises the temperature

The companies that produce the first coronavirus vaccine whose authorization was granted by the European Medicines Agency, Pfizer and BioNTech have submitted new data to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to show that their drug can retain its efficacy after two weeks stored at temperatures between -25 ° C and -15 ° C.

If these data are finally approved, the companies would overturn the distribution of their drugs, since The technical data sheet of the vaccine specifically indicates that they must be kept in special freezers at temperatures between -80 ° C and -60 ° C, where they last up to six months.

Once removed from these freezers, the vaccines must remain in a container designed by Pfizer where they can be kept up to 30 days as long as the freezer is refilled every 5 days with dry ice. In addition, once the vials have been extracted and mixed with the saline diluent prior to inoculation, it lasts five days in a conventional refrigerator.

Greater flexibility in distribution

The results of the study, which will be made available to all world drug regulatory agencies during “the next few weeks”, could mean new facilities in the immunization process with the BNT162b2 vaccine, since it would last 14 more days out of the deep freezers.

“If this modification is finally approved, pharmacies and vaccination centers will have an easier time managing vaccines and we will make it more accessible in all parts of the world”, said Pfizer President and CEO Albert Bourla.

For his part, the CEO and co-founder of BioNTech, Ugur Sahin, has insisted on this line by ensuring that, if the latest data is given the green light, will allow “to make the vaccine accessible to the world’s most vulnerable people.”

Preservation of vaccines

If this novelty finally becomes official, the Pfizer vaccine will have storage conditions increasingly similar to those of the drugs produced by Moderna and AstraZeneca / Oxford. Moderna’s vaccine, made from messenger RNA, like that from Pfizer / BioNTech, should be stored at around -20 ° C. For its part, those from the United Kingdom can be stored at temperatures between 2 ° C and 8 ° C.
