In the last week, between May 14 and 20, 1,054 people most affected by Covid-19 were reported throughout Nicaragua, according to the Covid-19 Citizen Observatory, for a total of 2,323 cases across the country. According to epidemiologist Álvaro Ramírez, this means that the pandemic is escalating upward in Nicaragua and it is necessary for people to take drastic measures, mainly shutting themselves in their homes and increasing hygiene in all places.

The latest government report, through the Ministry of Health, which now performs them every Tuesday, in Nicaragua there are only 279 cases of infections, but Ramírez indicates that these figures “are a mockery” for the people, who would be unprotected in the face of the pandemic of the Covid-19.

According to Ramírez, who says he does not belong to the Covid-19 Citizen Observatory but is pending his reports, to reach 1,200 cases, it took a period of two reports, but now only one to increase almost the same amount, almost one 83 percent increase in the last week, which means that there will be more and more cases of contagion in Nicaragua. It would be expected that in a next report the figure will be between four thousand and five thousand cases.

On the case of those killed by Covid-19, which according to the Observatory are 465 until this May 20, and according to the government are 17, the epidemiologist Ramírez indicates that they could rise in the same proportion as the infections, that is, triple And he also points out that if the trucks now leave hospitals with a coffin, in the next few days they would leave with several.

Population should take Covid-19 seriously

The also epidemiologist Leonel Argüello says that the population should take seriously the warnings made by unofficial sources, because in epidemiology “all rumors” are taken into account and in the case of the Covid-19 Citizen Observatory it is an important effort of the surveillance of the pandemic on the part of civil society.

Argüello indicates that both official and unofficial figures will never give a real idea of the danger of the pandemic in Nicaragua. “The danger of the pandemic is much greater,” says Argüello, who believes that the population should be aware of what is happening in their neighborhoods, where more and more people are known to be infected and surely there have already been deaths in each one. from them.

Reaching a hospital is almost death, epidemiologists say. What citizens must do is avoid contagion so that they do not have to go to one of these healthcare centers. THE PRESS / ARCHIVE

Avoid infections at all costs

According to Argüello, right now what should be done is avoid contagions so that there are fewer deaths because the pandemic is experiencing “accelerated growth in Nicaragua” and the population must keep a distance of 1.5 meters between person and person, not touching their faces, eyes, nose, mouth, because you should consider that your hands are contaminated and wash your hands with soap and water every so often for 40 seconds.
