Coronavirus I The three symptoms that can anticipate a serious picture of COVID-19

A study of the Spanish Society of Internal Medicine (SEMI) has determined that hePatients with symptoms of fever, cough, and respiratory distress suffer from a more serious coronavirus disease. Conversely, those with the most common symptoms of a cold common such as fever, cough, plus loss of taste and smell, they usually develop a milder infection.

Those individuals who present among their symptoms vomiting or diarrhea, will also suffer the disease in a more serious way, but it would not reach the level of risk of those patients who present with respiratory distress. Patients in this group are more likely to be admitted to the Intensive Care Units (ICUs), as well as dying.

12,000 Spanish patients

The study was carried out with data from 12,000 patients from different Spanish hospitals. The group of patients with the most common symptoms of a cold had a lower percentage of ICU admission and a lower mortality rate. From the group of people with symptoms of headache, throat or muscle pain, only 10% had to be admitted to the ICU.

“Many hospital centers sent their data to prepare the study, which finally collected the evolution of 12,000 Spanish patients. Patients with dyspnea (asphyxia) would a priori be like those with any other type of pneumonia, but if fever and cough are added, their evolution may be worse. Almost all those admitted suffer the three worst symptoms, something that it can be aggravated by processes such as diabetes, obesity or advanced age ”, has explained José Ángel Martín Oterino, boss of Internal Medicine Service of the Hospital de Salamanca, who participated in the study.

The patient has varied during the months of the pandemic

The Salamanca Hospital has provided data from 100 patients who were admitted during the first five months of the pandemic (March-July). Since then, the type of patients has varied greatly with the infected who are now registered.

In statements collected by The Salamanca Gazette, Oterino has pointed out: “The infected person now varies a bit because he started when he was younger. Further, now the sick go to the Hospital earlier. In March and April many waited at home and arrived almost 7 days after the onset of symptoms, when the worst phase of the disease can begin, with the inflammatory process and loss of control of the symptoms. This led to the patients starting the process within hours of entering, something that now it slows down much earlier “, it is finished.
