The number of cases of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus continues to rise in the state of New York and is already at levels not seen from the past month of April, as announced this Friday by the authorities.

New York, which was initially the great epicenter of the pandemic in United States, had managed to maintain very low numbers of infections for months compared to the rest of the country. Although the numbers are still low compared to other areas, in recent weeks infections have begun to accelerate, triggering concern from the authorities, who have taken measures such as the closure of public schools in the Big Apple.

This Friday, the state notified 8,176 new cases registered the previous day, out of a total of 219,442 tests carried out, a new record, which places the positivity rate at 3.72%. Slightly more than 3,100 people are hospitalized and, of them, 636 in intensive care units, while throughout Thursday 39 people died from coronavirus.

« We are seeing an increase in the numbers in the country and within our own state. It started with the fall and is going to continue and surely get worse in the winter, » New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said in a statement.

According to Cuomo, in this day and age it is more important than ever for citizens to take precautions and wear masks.
