Cambodia.- A construction crane in collapsed Wednesday in northwest Cambodia, killing at least five people and wounding four others.

The incident occurred in the city of Poipet, in northwest Cambodia, on the border with Thailand, authorities reported.

The crane was being operated on ground wet from rain, which made it unstable, said Ath Khem, Banteay Meanchey provincial police chief. He added that the crane fell while lifting heavy concrete blocks and described the accident as a result of carelessness.

The crane fell on houses adjoining the construction site, killing the victims. None of the workers were injured, he said.

PoipetAn important commercial area, it is a booming city with many casinos frequented by foreigners, mainly from Thailand. It has the reputation of being a « city of sin ».

In recent years, a fast-growing economy fueled a wave of construction in Cambodia. But this boom has led to several fatal accidents due to poor construction practices and non-compliance with safety regulations.

In January, at least 36 people died after a building under construction collapsed in the southern city of Kep, and another 23 were rescued alive. Women and children were among the victims as it is not unusual in Southeast Asia for families of construction employees to live at the workplace.
