The head of CIDE said that the cuts will affect the development of various investigations in various institutions
Sergio López Ayllón, holder of the Economic Research and Teaching Center (CIDE), asked the Government of Mexico to rethink the 75 percent budget cut to spending on items related to materials, supplies and general services in different institutions.
During an interview, the specialist stated that the measure ordered by the Secretariat of Finance and Public Credit It does not take into account the specificities of each agency involved, including CIDE itself, so it runs the risk of triggering counterproductive consequences.
I believe that in these days there will have to be conversations by Conacyt with the Ministry of Finance to see if we can minimize the negative effects on research institutions, “he said.
The CIDE head commented that this cut will affect the development of various investigations that need to be deployed in the field or that use special software.
He asserted that the measure will not only affect the agency it heads, but will also impact the National Council for Science and Technology (Conacyt), the Center for Research and Advanced Studies (Cinvestav), the National Polytechnic Institute, among others.
We understand that an effort of austerity and rationality must be made in spending, we understand this and we are supportive, but there are certain very specific dimensions that had to be taken into consideration, ”he said.
López Ayllón commented that part of the strategy for the next semester will be to carry out operations at CIDE online to reduce costs; however, the measure is also taken due to the COVID-19 pandemic, given the uncertainty surrounding the behavior of the disease.
