Beijing.- The National Health Commission of China reported today a new death by the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, the first time that the Asian country announces a death from this cause since last May 17.
According to health authorities, the death occurred in the northeastern province of Hebei, which surrounds Beijing, and which is the scene of an outbreak that has led to the closure of three cities, including the provincial capital, Shijiazhuang, with 11 million inhabitants.
With this new death, the official number of deaths from covid in the China continental stands at 4,635.
Likewise, the source announced today the detection of 138 new cases of the coronavirus, the highest number of new infections since the beginning of March.
On March 6, the institution announced 143 cases, although then the report also included 30 deaths.
Of those 138 published today, 124 were caused by local contagion, all of them in the northeast of the country: in Hebei province there were 81, while Heilongjiang, on the border with Russia and also the focus of another outbreak, registered the remaining 43, almost the triple than the previous day.
The remaining 14 cases up to 138 total were located in travelers from abroad in Shanghai (east, 8), Beijing (1), and in the provinces of Canton (southeast, 3), Henan (center-east, 1) and Guangxi (south, 1).
In addition, the health authorities also reported today the detection of 78 asymptomatic infections (3 of them, from abroad), although Beijing does not include them as confirmed cases unless they manifest symptoms.
The total of this type of infections under observation is 599, of which 252 are « imported ».
Likewise, the National Health Commission detailed that, until last local midnight (16.00 GMT on Wednesday), 36 patients were discharged after successfully overcoming the covid-19, and three entered a serious condition.
In this way, the total number of infected active in the China Continental stood at 885, of which 24 are serious.
The institution pointed out that, since the beginning of the pandemic, 87,844 people have been infected in the country, among which 82,324 have managed to heal.
To date, 931,438 close contacts with infected people have been followed up, of which 30,963 remain under observation.
Meanwhile, in the semi-autonomous city of Hong Kong – immersed in a fourth wave of infections for months – the authorities announced 42 new cases, bringing the total number of infected to 9,386 since the beginning of the pandemic, of the that 161 perished.
