SANTIAGO, Jul 28 (.) – Chilean President Sebastián Piñera on Tuesday removed his Interior Minister Gonzalo Blumel, the Chancellor and other ministers from the political area in a wide-ranging change of cabinet after an extensive crisis unleashed by the wave of protests last year and exacerbated by the coronavirus pandemic.

Blumel, who came to the government in October in the first weeks of demonstrations as a representative of a more progressive right, was replaced by Senator Víctor Pérez, a member of the right-wing UDI party, which represents the most conservative wing of the government.

Piñera also applied changes in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Defense, the ministers of the General Secretariat of government and the presidency, as well as Social Development.
