MEXICO CITY (AP) – An alleged lieutenant of a drug cartel was arrested for the murder of a youtuber in 2018 in the port of Acapulco, prosecutors from the state of Guerrero, in southern Mexico, reported.
The Guerrero State Prosecutor’s Office indicated that the suspect was once the second in charge of the Acapulco cartel. The agency only identified him by name, Edgar Saúl, in compliance with anti-discrimination regulations.
The victim, Leslie Ann Pamela Montenegro, was known for her YouTube character « Nana Pelucas. »
Before his death, the victim had received threats from a drug trafficking group due to his YouTube channel and his comments about local events in the port city. She was shot to death by men who entered the restaurant she ran near the tourist area of Acapulco.
Montenegro wore a wig and glasses to make humorous comments and criticisms, sometimes directed at the local government.
Drug trafficking groups in Mexico have previously targeted bloggers and social media figures, allegedly for revealing information about their activities.
In 2011, a woman who used social media to report local events was found beheaded by a drug cartel in the city of Nuevo Laredo, bordering Laredo, Texas.
