Pirelli has started its 2021 development program for the 18-inch tires that will be used for the first time during the 2022 season. Charles Leclerc rolled on Monday and Carlos Sainz joined him on Tuesday at Jerez.
The 2022 season will be loaded with technical innovations thanks to the implementation of a new regulation and an important part of these innovations will be the tires, which will go from the current 13 inches to a measure much more in line with the current trend of the commercial automotive industry: 18 inches.
Pirelli had planned to carry out the development of these new tires during 2020, but the pandemic forced to postpone the introduction of the regulation and, therefore, the test plan of the Italian firm.
Now, at the Jerez circuit, Ferrari and Pirelli have taken up the development tests, which this year will amount to a total of 30 days. The first one took place on Monday with Charles Leclerc at the controls of the 2019 Ferrari SF90 on a wet track for extreme rain tires.
