After a difficult year, Saúl Canelo Álvarez didn’t want to let 2020 go by without a fight. Yesterday afternoon he announced that he will fight Englishman Callum Smith, whom he recognizes as one of the best in super-middleweight in Europe, on December 19, at a venue that is yet to be confirmed.
Not only did he have to face the effects of the pandemic on his calendar, but also its consequences in the millionaire agreement with DAZN and the company that launched him to fame, Golden Boy. Between lawsuits and the definitive break with his former promoter, his future was uncertain. It was a difficult year because we don’t like being involved in lawsuits, says Álvarez; “But we are happy with the result we have today. I didn’t want 2020 to go away like that, without a Canelo fight. “
Eddy Reynoso, coach of the fighter from Guadalajara, also alluded to all the problems of an administrative nature that were overcome this year and whose outcome was the redhead’s free agent status.
We had administrative setbacks and lawsuits, Reynoso explains, but we kept training during the pandemic and wanted a fight this year. Having a fighter like Saúl, disciplined and always in the gym, gives you the guideline to be able to get into the ring at any time.
The fight will be possible after an agreement with the British promoter Eddie Hearn and DAZN and, according to Canelo himself, they will do everything possible to get fans to the arena where it takes place.
We do our best to get fans to attend, says the Mexican; we are working so that the public can enter.
Eddy described Callum Smith as a dangerous rival, undefeated champion by the World Boxing Association and The Ring, the specialized boxing magazine, as well as holding the diamond belt in the category by the World Boxing Council. He warned that this is a fighter who has won almost all of his contests by knockout and that represents a great risk that a fighter like Canelo must take.
We work for these types of risks, Eddy says; Callum Smith is a tremendous boxer, a very strong danger, but Saúl is the best in the world.
The fight will be in 168 pounds, super middle division, and in the next few days the venue of the fight will be made public. I’m in a good rhythm. At these levels you have to adapt to all situations, said Canelo.
