A few days ago, the first images and an official synopsis of the upcoming Showtime television channel miniseries, which focuses on the current President of the United States, were revealed. It is not, it should be clarified, a documentary program but a dramatization around the controversial 2016 presidential elections and the first months of Donald Trump’s term, played here by Irish actor Brendan Gleeson. The Comey Rule It is the title of this show – made up of two parts – that will hit the small screen in a couple of months. Therefore, Vanity Fair has just released its first teaser (click here to watch the video), as well as a set of novel stills.
The Comey Rule is based on the book A Higher Loyalty, consisting of the memoirs of James Comey, a former director of the FBI whose work at the head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation had a leading role in the voting four years ago. Back then, the agency was investigating a scandalous case involving Democratic Party candidate Hillary Clinton (the famous email controversy) while also grappling with evidence of an attempted Russian intervention in the 2016 election, in favor of the republican candidate.
Having conceived a non-satirical fiction, the director and screenwriter Billy Ray —Responsible for The Comey Rule— presumes that this will be « the first representation of Donald Trump as a dramatic character », oblivious to burlesque incarnations like that of Alec Baldwin on Saturday Night Live.
Also, Ray recognizes the value of Brendan Gleeson (In Bruges) by taking on a role that will most likely lead to countless attacks on you.
« Here’s a guy [Gleeson] who has won many awards and had a great career. He is sitting in Ireland, without disturbing anyone », comments the director (via). «This guy needs controversy as much as he needs a hole in his head. I mean, there is simply no reason to look for the kind of grief you are about to catch. And in fact, he turned down the role the first time we offered it to him for exactly that reason.
Obviously, the Golden Globe nominated histrion ended up accepting the offer and thus joined a cast consisting of Michael Kelly, Holly Hunter, Jonathan Banks and Jeff Daniels. The latter, in the role of James Comey himself.
The Comey Rule will debut in the US on September 27 through the subscription channel Showtime… less than two months from the 2020 presidential elections.

Toño Guzmán I have a very bad memory. In solidarity with my memories, I choose to lose myself too. Preferably in a movie theater.
