Finnish driver Valtteri Bottas was the fastest in the second free test session of the Tuscan Grand Prix, after beating his Mercedes teammate, Briton Lewis Hamilton, by 0.207s. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen was again third and very close to the ‘Black Arrows’.

Bottas improved his set time in the morning session by 0.890s, once again showing that Mercedes is in excellent shape to take top honors at Mugello, its debut circuit in the Formula 1 world championship. This is also corroborated by the work of Lewis Hamilton.

Red Bull has escorted the Mercedes with Max Verstappen and Alexander Albon, yes, with the Dutchman much closer, at 0.246s. Meanwhile the Thai finished 0.982s behind Bottas and 0.736s behind his Dutch teammate. It is still quite wide considering that they turn with the same car.

The Renault duo made up of Daniel Ricciardo and Esteban Ocon, achieved the fifth and sixth time. Behind them was the Mexican Sergio Pérez, who had an incident with Kimi Räikkönen at the exit of the pit lane. Czech with his car hit the Finn’s Alfa Romeo and generated a spin. After reviewing the evidence, the Racing Point driver will lose one position on the starting grid in Sunday’s race.

Eighth place for the winner of the last Italian GP, Pierre Gasly. The top 10 was completed by Kimi Räikkönen from Alfa Romeo and Charles Leclerc from Ferrari. Speaking of the Maranello team, Sebastian Vettel was twelfth and his session did not end in the best way, as his car stopped when he was returning to the garage. He was in the middle of the track. Reliability is still a headache for Italian cars.

In the middle of the Ferraris, Lance Stroll of Racing Point finished in eleventh place. McLaren drivers Carlos Sainz and Lando Norris came in thirteenth and fourteenth. The young British driver was only able to complete nine laps, after he lost control of the car exiting Turn 4. He damaged his front wing and the race direction subsequently raised the red flag. The removal procedure took several minutes, a situation that can occur in the rest of the weekend since it is an old school circuit, with no escape zones, just gravel.

Daniil Kvyat from AlphaTauri was fifteenth. The Williamses of George Russell and Nicholas Latifi were improving by finishing in the sixteenth and eighteenth time. In between them finished Antonio Giovinazzi of Alfa Romeo, while the Haas of Kevin Magnussen and Romain Grosjean were last.

The vast majority of pilots have tried the soft compound C3 and the medium C2. The hard C1 has had less running. According to Pirelli, the difference between hard and medium is 0.7s per lap, while from medium to soft there are 0.9s. The degradation of the soft compound is notorious and will be a key element to take into account for the race. The ambient temperature was 29ºC and 43ºC for asphalt.

Tomorrow at 12:00 noon, Scarperia will start the third and last free test session and later at 3:00 p.m. the classification of the Grand Prix of Tuscany with LIVE broadcast from F1Latam.com.
