Biden selects more members for White House team

US President-elect Joe Biden added four veterans of President Barack Obama’s administration to his White House team. A Hispanic is shaping up to be a close aide to future first lady Jill Biden.

Cathy Russell, who was Biden’s chief of staff when he was vice president, will be the director of the Office of Presidential Personnel, which evaluates applicants for positions in the administration.

Louisa Terrell, a former legislative adviser to the Obama administration and Biden’s deputy Senate deputy chief of staff, will serve as director of the White House Office of Legislative Affairs. Terrell has already been involved in legislative contacts as part of Biden’s transition team.

Carlos Elizondo, Jill Biden’s social secretary during the Obama administration, will repeat that role for the future first lady. Mala Adaga will serve as policy director for Jill Biden. Adaga was director for higher education and military families at the Biden Foundation.

The announcements come just days after Biden released his first round of staff appointments, including that of his current campaign manager, Jen O’Malley Dillon, as deputy chief of staff and that of Democratic Rep. Cedirc Richmond, co-chair of the campaign, as director of the public liaison office.

Also last week, Biden announced that his longtime collaborator Ron Klain would be the chief of staff.

Although the appointments give an idea of the White House that Biden is forming, the president-elect has not yet appointed anyone to fill the role of coordinator of the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, a position that Klein announced this week, nor Nor has it appointed anyone to important communications positions.

The team is short of thousands of staff-level positions to fill when the future government takes office in January and is currently screening applicants and contacting potential candidates for senior positions.

Biden has indicated that he plans to announce some of his cabinet members around the Thanksgiving holiday – Thursday, November 26 – and on Thursday he said he has already decided who will be his secretary of the Treasury.
