Lisbon. A day before playing the semifinals of the Portuguese League Cup against Braga, Benfica detected a total of 17 positives for Covid-19 among the squad and the coaching staff of the first team, after a round of tests carried out since last Saturday.
Given these data, in defense of public health and the physical integrity of the athletes involved, Benfica refers to the DGS (General Health Directorate) the decision not to appear in competitions for the next 14 days, the club explained in a statement.
Meanwhile, Sporting Lisbon advanced to the final of the Portuguese League Cup by coming back and beating Porto 2-1, where the Mexican Jesús Manuel Tecatito Corona plays, yesterday in the first semifinal of the tournament, with a double from Jovane Cabral.
Moussa Marega opened the scoring for Porto at minute 79, but the young Cape Verdean Cabral balanced with a cross shot that slipped after hitting the post (86) and repeated in the discount to put the final 2-1 (90 + 4) .
The tricolor forward started and played 86 minutes in the defeat of his team, which cost him elimination in the cup tournament.
Sporting won a match marked by a previous controversy after Porto accused their rival of committing an attack against public health for their intention to line up two players who had tested positive for Covid-19 four days earlier.
The Portuguese champion went on to assure that he would be willing to re-evaluate his participation in the Final Four of the League Cup if the authorities did not impose the ten-day quarantine provided for by the sanitary protocol in force on those players.
Sporting, for their part, responded by stating that these two cases are in all probability false positives.
Finally, the match was played and the Lisbon team will face the winner of the second semifinal that will face Benfica with Sporting de Braga.
